Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level extension is the single TLD intended for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. At first, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to book john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level domain names remained active.
